Our Philosophy
"Bishop Ford Central
Catholic High School strives to be a community of persons -
administrators, teachers, staff, parents, and students - united by their
common bond of faith in God as expressed in the Roman Catholic tradition
and welcoming all who wish to participate in this community.
The administrators and
teachers recognize the mandate that 'The future of humanity lies in
the hands of those who are strong enough to provide coming generations
with reasons for living and hoping.' (The Church of Today, 31)
In accepting this
mandate, the community of Bishop Ford work together to assist each
member in striving to attain his/her potential in becoming a mature and
fulfilled Christian person.
We provide spiritual,
educational, and social opportunities which coincide with threefold aim
of Catholic education as defined in the pastoral, 'To Teach as Jesus
Did.'

'The
ideal of Christian education will best be realized by programs which
create the widest opportunities for students to receive systematic
catechesis, experience daily living in a faith community, and develop
commitment and skill in serving others.'
In light of this
Christian ideal, we believe that our students should be instructed in
human knowledge and skills, and be guided by Christian values which will
enhance their participation in a democratic society."

OUR HISTORY
Francis X. Ford, Brooklyn
resident, Maryknoll Bishop and a man of great personal courage, was
martyred in China in 1952. One of the attempts to memorialize his fine
example to youth, was the Brooklyn Diocese's dedication of our school in
1962, to his memory.
In 1976, a private Board
of Trustees assumed stewardship of the school, renamed it Bishop Ford
Central Catholic High School and instituted a number of changes. One of
the most notable was the change from an all boys school to an
institution committed to co-education. It was our belief that in an
atmosphere of societal turmoil, there was a need for a value-ladened
education for the young men and women of tomorrow.
For over forty years,
Bishop Ford High School, accredited by the Regents of the State of New
York and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools has
provided quality for thousands of Brooklyn students.
THE SCHOOL
The
Chinese mission of Francis X. Ford is strikingly reflected in the
beautiful design of the school. The cross which surmounts the pagoda on
our roof is a landmark visible for miles. Red
and Black, the colors symbolic of the Chinese
artistic tradition and the Maryknoll Fathers, permeate our school. These
colors in the chapel, the main lobby, the auditorium, throughout the
classrooms, are constant reminders of Bishop Ford and his contributions
and good works.
Our building, located in
the Park Slope area at 500 19th Street, occupies the site of the old
Brooklyn trolley barns, on which, during the Civil War, stood a Federal
prison. This location is one of the safest and most accessible in all of
Brooklyn. The F train, the B67, B68, B69 and B75 buses all stop within a
few blocks of the school.

Prayer of
Bishop Ford

God
the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Love, has in all truth overshadowed us and claimed us body
and soul as a "prized" possession. The spirit has infused into our souls the
gifts of wisdom, counsel, understanding, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord.
Our God is willing and anxious to set our hearts on fire and to send us out into our
life's work confident in love.

Goals
& Objectives...To educate, to prepare for
the future - these are the goals of our administration, faculty and staff.
In this quest we are united in common bonds: faith in God as expressed in
the Roman Catholic tradition, respect for nation, and love - love of
knowledge, love of God, love of others and love of self. We seek to
provide spiritual, educational, and social opportunities which coincide
with the threefold aim of Catholic education as defined in the Bishops'
pastoral, "To Teach as Jesus Did."
Students are prepared not
solely for college. Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School strives to
prepare your children and our students to be the well-rounded parents,
neighbors and citizens of tomorrow.
